I was raised Roman Catholic, but was born again in an evangelical church in 1982. I was thrilled to be among Bible-only churches, churches for whom the Bible was “the sole rule of faith and practice.” As I began to read the Bible, however, I realized this claim was simply false. Instead, what I found was a version of Mark Twain’s famous quote:
Laws are sand, customs are rock. Laws can be evaded and punishment escaped, but an openly transgressed custom brings sure punishment. In the case of Christians, though, it is the Bible that is sand, interpreted by the customs of denominations or the whims of popular speakers without regard to reason.
I am on a militant quest for honesty among the people of God, that we would subject ourselves to the Scriptures and their author, God, with the reverence due to him and it, not shaping the Scriptures, but letting the Scriptures shape us.
Paul writes and teaches on church history with an emphasis on the faith once for all delivered to the saints. His most well-known book, Decoding Nicea, tells the story of the Council of Nicea and explains how to knew who is telling you the truth historically.
Because my father is from Hawaii and both he and I were in the military, I have visited or lived in all 50 states of the USA.
