Paul Pavao
Writer on Christian history
Location & Time Zone:
Springdale, AR, USA (Chicago time zone)

Detailed Biography:

I was raised Roman Catholic, but was born again in an evangelical church in 1982. I was thrilled to be among Bible-only churches, churches for whom the Bible was “the sole rule of faith and practice.” As I began to read the Bible, however, I realized this claim was simply false. Instead, what I found was a version of Mark Twain’s famous quote:

Laws are sand, customs are rock. Laws can be evaded and punishment escaped, but an openly transgressed custom brings sure punishment. In the case of Christians, though, it is the Bible that is sand, interpreted by the customs of denominations or the whims of popular speakers without regard to reason.

I am on a militant quest for honesty among the people of God, that we would subject ourselves to the Scriptures and their author, God, with the reverence due to him and it, not shaping the Scriptures, but letting the Scriptures shape us.
